A dog breed noted for its monkey-like face originates from Germany in the 17th century. This little terrier type dogs was in fact dubbed as Monkey Dog. Diablotin Moustachu, meaning mustached little devil was given to the dog by French breed enthusiasts. This dog was primarily developed to be a rodent catcher. During the early years of the breed’s existence, these dogs are commonly seen in barns, in stables, granaries and in kitchens keeping these places free of rodents.

A high level of intelligence, an affectionate nature and the renowned clownish personality are the admirable qualities of an Affenpinscher. The Affenpinscher is certainly the correct choice for a dog owner wanting a pet that has the ability to amuse the family with its comic antics. This breed is really amusing as it has this attitude of showing off to get people’s attention every chance it could get. Would it be any wonder if the lowly rat catcher that curls up in barns would become highly valued pets that use the owners lap as a place to rest. However, this dogs has a cunning personality. The sly dog has what it takes to wrap the owners around its little fingers. The dog is small in size but big in personality as it can easily compel the family to give in to its wishes. This dog is highly valued as a family companion because of its admirable qualities but owners must never forget that the dog can be overbearing if allowed. A spoiled Affenpinscher can easily develop into a little tyrant. An Affenpinscher that cannot have its way will be in a huff all day. The dog is small but it will attack if teased by strangers. The tough personality that earned this dog the “mustached little devil” name can be corrected with consistent firm training and lots of loving care.

The Affenpinscher is listed as one of the toy breeds. Apartment dwellers wanting to have a pet can consider an Affenpinscher as one of the suitable choices. However, unlike other toy breeds, the dog has a rather high exercise requirement. The dog should be given an opportunity to exercise daily. Bear in mind, in spite of the size, the dog is very active. An Affenpinscher, apart from being cuddly is also an affectionate pet thus it is not surprising for an owner to carry and cuddle the dog constantly. A bored and inactive Affenpinscher will become a horrible destructive pet. Well trained and well cared for, the Affenpinscher will be an ideal home companion.
