Dog Grooming To Prevent Flea Infestation
Is the belief that an ugly dog also has an ugly owner true? This notion stems from the fact that the appearance of the dog reflects the kind of care it receives from its owner. A dirty and ill kept dog with oozing sores or tangled fur therefore would be believed to have a neglectful owner. People will believe that the owner is not fit to keep a dog for a pet.
Responsible dog owners are aware that good food is not enough to keep the pet healthy. The need to groom the dog regularly cannot be stressed enough as the routine would not only maintain the impressive appearance of the pet but would also resolve any developing parasite infestation that can cause the development of some health concerns.
Fleas are one of the common ectoparasites of dogs. Fleas are annoying parasites but aside from the discomfort, the infestation can also result to some health concerns. A dog with severe flea infestation will constantly scratch and bite the body because flea bites will cause severe itching. Dogs infested with fleas can develop flea allergy dermatitis if they have sensitivity to the parasite’s saliva. A dog’s appearance will be marred by the bald patches and oozing sores that would result from the flea infestation. A dog severely affected by fleas can suffer from anemia. Moreover, fleas can introduce tapeworms not only to the dog but also to the dog’s human family if flea-carrying tapeworm eggs are accidentally ingested.
Flea infestation can be prevented if the dog is groomed regularly. Fleas can be transmitted by an infested dog or when the dog plays or passes areas where fleas are hiding. An anti-flea product will eliminate adult fleas but the eggs that remained can start another infestation.
Grooming the pet regular is therefore very important. An anti-flea shampoo can be used in bathing the dog. The lather must be allowed to stay in the dog’s body for at least 10 minutes before it can be rinsed. Once the fur has thoroughly dried, use a fine toothed flea comb to remove fleas killed by the treatment. To prevent another flea attack, the places frequented by the dog must be thoroughly vacuumed. The beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed in hot water as well.
A regular grooming routine allows the dog owner to act on a developing parasite infestation before it worsens. These grooming sessions would also be treasured bonding moments with the pet.
