It was believed that the American Foxhounds these days were developed from the hunting dogs of George Washington. It was said that the father of United States received French Foxhounds from Lafayette, the French General that became a prominent figure in the American Revolution. The American Foxhounds were developed from these hounds that were given to George Washington.

American Foxhounds were bred to hunt in packs thus present day dogs have lived and worked in the same manner their ancestors did. The melodious voice that can be heard for miles is one of the hunting asset of American Foxhounds. These dogs are noted for their high prey drive thus it would be very difficult to call off a dog that has found an interesting scent. These dogs will constantly bay while following a prey and once the animal is found and cornered, the vocalization will change to signal the human hunters that follow on horseback .

Aside from the excellent hunting abilities, American Foxhounds are alsoa beautiful dog breed. The black, tan and white patches on the short coat that takes no particular shape, the large brown or hazel eyes, and the long wide ears as well as the long tail that is carried moderately high give the dog an impressive appearance. American Foxhound is large breed with an imposing appearance but this hunter is known for its mild manners and gentleness to children. American Foxhounds are loyal, sweet and easy going dogs. These dogs were primarily developed to hunt but would they do as home companions too?

American Foxhounds were bred to hunt in large packs. It is therefore expected that these dogs would be dogs oriented and not human oriented. American Foxhounds live in the same manner that their ancestors live. These dogs would thrive more in an atmosphere where they are allowed to be in the company of other dogs, to play, to roam and to hunt. However, this does not mean that this dog cannot be developed into an outstanding home companion.

Apartment living is not for an American Foxhound because of its high exercise requirements. This dog would be an ideal pet for an owner that loves to run and to jog. This is a breed of hound thus owner should expect the pet to have the infamous hound stubbornness. American Foxhounds are naturally affectionate but because they have the tendency to manifest their stubborn streak, these dogs have to be obedience trained and socialized to make them well mannered pets.
