A friendly, devoted and obedient dog is something every single dog owner wants, but obedience training your dog can be challenging and sometimes it feels as if it just doesn’t work.

Dogs by nature would like to satisfy their owner – it is in their genes.  The reason that most owners fall short at obedience training is that they either lack patience, or they are simply using the wrong strategies.

Routine

Dogs appreciate routine so training needs to always, if possible, be done at the same time of day.  This way your dog will recognize that it’s not play time, it is learning time.  Get rid off all of the distractions, such as toys and other pets, if you have any, to ensure that your dog can completely concentrate on his training.

Keep Training Sessions Brief

Though dogs get pleasure from finishing tasks, they’re going to lose interest if training sessions go on too long.  Keep training sessions brief and enjoyable.  Short sessions prevent your dog and you from becoming bored or frustrated. A couple of 10 minute sessions every day is definitely the ideal amount.

Stick to One Word Commands

Obedience training your dog is most easily accomplished by teaching your dog basic, one word commands together with hand gestures.  As an example if you want your dog to stay, just say “stay” and raise your hand, so that it’s next to their face. Start to walk backwards and continue to say “stay” in a firm way. Dogs don’t understand language beyond one or two word commands.  Dogs are able to read body language and tone of voice primarily. So keep calm and do not ramble at your dog.

Positive Reinforcement

Dogs react considerably better to positive reinforcement in comparison with negative.  In the event your dog doesn’t follow a command you should never yell or hit them.  As an alternative calmly take your dog back to the beginning and begin the command once more.  Each time your dog finishes a command reward them with strokes and a treat.  Praise the good and pay no attention to the bad; that is the very best attitude for obedience training.

Patience

Some days dogs are able to carry out commands perfectly on cue, but on other days it appears like they simply do not want to listen.  When you try to train your dog when he’s having an off day you could get upset and your patience might diminish.

Always show patience with your dog and never lose your temper. On these types of days it is best for both you and your dog for you to end the training session early and reschedule for later that day, or the following day.

Obedience training your dog calls for time and persistence; don’t expect your dog to get everything right the first time.  Take some time to enjoy your sessions and it should be valuable for both you and your canine pal!
