A dog breed noted for its monkey-like face originates from Germany in the 17th century. This little terrier type dogs was in fact dubbed as Monkey Dog. Diablotin Moustachu, meaning mustached little devil was given to the dog by French breed enthusiasts. This dog was primarily developed to be a rodent catcher. During the early years of the breed’s existence, these dogs are commonly seen in barns, in stables, granaries and in kitchens keeping these places free of rodents.

A high level of intelligence, an affectionate nature and the renowned clownish personality are the admirable qualities of an Affenpinscher. The Affenpinscher is certainly the correct choice for a dog owner wanting a pet that has the ability to amuse the family with its comic antics. This breed is really amusing as it has this attitude of showing off to get people’s attention every chance it could get. Would it be any wonder if the lowly rat catcher that curls up in barns would become highly valued pets that use the owners lap as a place to rest. However, this dogs has a cunning personality. The sly dog has what it takes to wrap the owners around its little fingers. The dog is small in size but big in personality as it can easily compel the family to give in to its wishes. This dog is highly valued as a family companion because of its admirable qualities but owners must never forget that the dog can be overbearing if allowed. A spoiled Affenpinscher can easily develop into a little tyrant. An Affenpinscher that cannot have its way will be in a huff all day. The dog is small but it will attack if teased by strangers. The tough personality that earned this dog the “mustached little devil” name can be corrected with consistent firm training and lots of loving care.

The Affenpinscher is listed as one of the toy breeds. Apartment dwellers wanting to have a pet can consider an Affenpinscher as one of the suitable choices. However, unlike other toy breeds, the dog has a rather high exercise requirement. The dog should be given an opportunity to exercise daily. Bear in mind, in spite of the size, the dog is very active. An Affenpinscher, apart from being cuddly is also an affectionate pet thus it is not surprising for an owner to carry and cuddle the dog constantly. A bored and inactive Affenpinscher will become a horrible destructive pet. Well trained and well cared for, the Affenpinscher will be an ideal home companion.

Dogs are probably the most loved pets. As such people tend to share whatever they eat with the dog unknowing that some human foods can be dangerous to dog. It is really quite perplexing how a perfectly safe food for humans can be poisonous to dogs. Humans and dog have many genetic similarities but they are also different in a lot of ways. The inability of a dog’s system to tolerate chocolate is one of these differences. Dogs are given bits of chocolate because not many dog owners are aware of the toxic effects of this food on dogs. Chocolates are comfort foods that give humans loads of benefits. Chocolates and dogs is an equation that can have dangerous results.

The substance theobromine in chocolate is the reason why this world’s most loved treat is toxic to dogs. Theobromine the chemical that is similar to caffeine is found in cocoa beans from where chocolate is derived. Theobromine serves as a stimulant and causes frequent urination, affects the kidneys and the heart muscles as well as the central nervous system. The toxic effects of theobromine in dogs is caused by dog’s inability to digest this substance. A dog that continuously ingest small amount of chocolates will eventually develop a variety of medical concerns because the dog’s inability to digest theobromine would result to an accumulation of this toxic substance.

Dog people love chocolates and because dogs are well loved pets, the chocolate bar or the Black Forest cake the dog owner is eating will be shared with the pet. Apparently, a dog will not show signs of poisoning if only a small amount of these kinds of chocolates are consumed. Chocolate is dose dependent meaning that a dog has to ingest about 100 to 150 milligrams per kilogram of dog body weight before the toxicity level can be reached. Different types of chocolates have different toxicity levels. The toxicity level is much lower in white chocolates because this type of chocolate contains very little theobromine. About 200 ounces of white chocolates must be consumed before signs of chocolate poisoning will be seen. Milk chocolates and semi-sweet chocolates have higher theobromine content. The baking chocolate is considered to be the most dangerous among all types of chocolates. Although a dog owner may not give the dog baking chocolate it is still possible for the dog to ingest substantial amount because the dog’s nose would find where the chocolates are kept and would have an eating spree. If this happens, the dog must be taken to the vet’s at once. It is always good to know what to do if your dog eats chocolate.

Burying bones, like barking and chewing is a common behavior of dogs. In movies, in cartoons and in children’s books dogs are always depicted as bone-burying animals. Dog owners are also exposed to the inclination of the pets to bury bones.

A dog carrying a bone on its mouth would furtively look around and try to look for the best hiding spot. As soon as the ideal hiding place is found, the dog will dig madly and speedily bury the bone. Do you know why your dog is burying bones What encourages a dog to bury bones? Burying bones is an instinctive behavior thus dog experts believe that man’s best friends don’t really know the reasons why they have this habit.

Dog experts believe that the habit of burying bones, similar to other canine behaviors is an instinctual nature that have survived in spite of domestication. The habit of burying bones is as old as the dog’s history. Even though dogs have existed for millions of years, it was not very long since these animals were domesticated. Primitive dogs have lived harsh lives in the wild and the habit of burying foods has been a great help to survive. Primitive dogs have lived difficult lives in the wild. Apart from the need to avoid the predators, dogs have to fight other animals for the prey because food is scarce.

We humans make sure that the pantry is fully stocked. Squirrels work long hours to fill their coffers with acorns and nuts. Even ants fill their anthills with food in preparation for the rainy days. Dogs bury bones to hoard food. In the wild, food is hard to come by. A dog that has hunted a prey would need to secure the “bounty” not only from other animal but also from members of the pack. The buried food will be unearthed when food is scarce. The buried prey may already have rotted but the bones rich with nutritious marrow will remain to fill the hungry stomach of the dogs.

Modern day dogs no longer need to hunt as food is regularly provided by the owner. Dogs need not bury bones for the rainy days but the instinct to hoard remains. The ingrained habit makes dogs dig holes to hide their bounty. Dog owners would just be surprised to find treats and bits of food hidden on the dog’s bed. Dog owners would just have to accept the fact that the dog may destroy the garden once in a while to bury its treasured bones.

The American Foxhound bears a striking resemblance to the body build of a Beagle. The dog generally stands between 21 to 25 inches and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. The streamlined athletic body is thickly covered with a short fur that ranges in color from tan and white, red and white and the impressive combination of black, tan and white. Well boned, straight and long legs give this breed its legendary speed.

The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony – long before it was given the name America. The breed originated from the pack of English hunting dogs that was brought to the Crown Colony by Robert Brooke in 1650.

In its country of origin, these dogs were acclaimed for being excellent hunters. The dogs were used by the British landed gentry to hunt foxes. Hunted in packs, the dogs will chase the prey while the hunters follow on horseback. A change in the deep melodious voice of the dog signifies that a prey is found. New World settlers utilize the dog in the same manner. American Foxhound is a ferocious breed thus it was rumored that the dog have been used by the colonizers to hunt Indians.

The American Foxhound was developed from the crossing of English hounds with the dogs of settlers from Ireland and France. This has resulted to the development of the American Foxhound.

The American Foxhound, first and foremost is a hunting dog. An American Foxhound would be in its element if it is chasing a prey. The breed is endowed with an excellent scenting ability, an impressive stamina and a courageous and intense drive. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal. That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.

American Foxhounds are highly valued for their excellent hunting abilities. These courageous hunters though have a sweet and loving personality. American Foxhounds have gained a reputation for being courageous and tenacious hunters but in the company of its human family the dogs turn into gentle well mannered companions. This breed of dogs is not a one man dog. These hunting dogs form a strong bond with the family but these dogs are noted to bond closely with the children.

The client was just by the Globe Theatre in Southwark, so walking along the River Thames here was great. It was especially special today, the dry day combined with the low winter sun, really meant the Thames and the historic local buildings were wonderful, if I was a Monet, who had a great period of painting along the areas alongside the Thames, I would have had a field day.

This area as well as the Globe Theatre is also the home to the Tate Gallery, if only Battersea Power station can be saved in the same way as the Tate, we will be all better off. Whilst the area does not have the green open spaces of Dulwich Park, there are small grass patches, there is one just between the Globe theatre and the Tate Modern, shielded by some beautiful silver birches.

If you want to go north across the Thames, you can use the infamous millennium bridge, dogs may have been worried walking across it originally. It was named originally the wobbling bridge by Londoners, as it wobbled!! So shortly after opening in 2000 it was closed for a couple of years as it was modified to stop the wobbling, which they did.

So if you walk across the millennium bridge now, you have a great view of St Pauls cathedral and its Dome as you cross. In its own right it is a piece of art and was rightfully chosen as winner in the 1996 competition run by Southwark council. It was called the “blade of light” and was designed by Arup, Foster and Partners and Sir Anthony Caro and is London’s only pedestrian steel suspension bridge.

It was lunchtime, so there were not many dog walkers around, but I came across two lovely six year old Pomeranians, a lovely dog. They are one of the toy dogs with the most stamina, especially as their owner was walking them as part of his programme to climb Mount Kilimanjaro next year. I do not know why but Pomeranian dogs are often kept in pairs.

So a different London dog walking route, but one which is a pleasure on a day like today. Sarah the Dulwich Dog Walker will certainly be happy with dog walking in the area of Southwark along the River Thames.

I had a great time out with Marlene, our Paddington Pet Sitter on Friday. She was looking after a couple of lovely Pomeranian dogs. Slightly outside her normal area of Bayswater and Paddington, but with two lovely dogs not a problem.

The Pomeranians were not a breed that we had experience of, so did some research on them prior to starting with them, which we have put on the web site. Those with experience of them are right in giving the Pomeranian such a good write up as a friendly toy dog with a varied Royal past, being owned by Queen Victoria amongst others.

I met up with her and the dogs in the nearby Fulham Bishops Park, smaller than the giant Hyde Park that Paddington dog walkers are used to. Bishops Park is beautifully located by the River Thames going down from Craven Cottage down to Putney Bridge. We went around a few times and the Pomeranian or Poms are surprisingly active for a toy dog, they were on the move for a good hour as we wanted to take some photos of them to go with the breed article. Not helped by my dog photography.

Paddington Dog Walker

Bishops Park is certainly a great place to walk dogs, or break a walk along the Thames. It dates back to the end of the nineteenth century and is of specific historical interest and is maintained by English Heritage. There is the memorial for the International Brigade who fought in the Spanish Civil War.

Bishops Park has a couple of enclosed areas for dogs to be let loose in, unless they are some dogs like the Pomeranians that can go through the gaps in the fence. They however had good fun with a new friend a poodle / Labrador cross puppy, who was four times the size of our dogs.

Being Pomeranians we had to be careful with them jumping, as they are prone to leg injuries. We had some fun with some training of the Pomeranians, trying to get them to sit for their treats. At least there was some improvement.

It was a shame to say goodbye to them but, Marlene had to head off to her Bengal Cats she was looking after.
